KS1 Creative Curriculum - Cornerstones

Originally inspired by the pre-school settings of Reggio Emilia, the Cornerstones approach centres on the belief that children learn better when their interests and fascinations are allowed to flourish, where they are encouraged to explore subjects in a variety of ways and are viewed in terms of their strengths, not their weaknesses. This approach is successful through a four-stage teaching philosophy: Engage, Develop, Innovate, Express.

Key Stage 1 have a long term plan of half termly topics taken from Cornerstones, and adapted according to the learning needs of the current cohort, and supplemented by specialist music teaching, wider opportunities and stimulating visits.

Our four cornerstones of learning:
Hook learners in with a memorable experience. Set the scene and provide context for learning. Ask questions to provoke thought and interest.

Teach knowledge for depth and understanding. Demonstrate new skills and allow time for consolidation and mastery. Provide creative opportunity for making and doing. Embed reading, writing and communication across the curriculum.

Provide imaginative scenarios that inspire children's creative thinking. Encourage creative responses and independent thinking. Provide time for children to embed knowledge, understanding and skills.

Support evaluation through talk and thinking. Encourage reflection by asking questions. Celebrate success.
